Abuja, Mar 5 (Prensa Latina) Liberia''s President George Weah asked Nigeria today for support to boost the country''s economy, because in his opinion political change does not make sense without economic support.
He said that Liberia voted for change and hope and change finally arrived, but political change has no sense without development, prosperity and growth and, thus, Nigeria's aid to boost economy.
Weah, former soccer player, said that Liberia is now open to the Nigerian private sector, and describes the trade rate between the two countries as low, as it does not exceed $5 million USD.
He said that electricity and energy sectors, road construction, housing, mining and fishing, among others, could be of great interest to Nigerian investors, individuals or companies, in varied ways of investment.
After a meeting with his Nigerian counterpart Muhammadu Buhari, Weah told the media that he traveled on a mission of gratitude and respect for the roles that Buhari and Nigeria played in keeping peace and stability in West Africa and particularly in Liberia.
Weah said that although Nigeria's economy is among the most important in Africa with the most powerful army in that area, this country has never used its wealth and military skills to expand its territory, threaten its neighbors or destabilize another sovereign country.
Weah particularly asked the Nigerian Government to provide 6,000 teachers as part of the technical assistance agreement between the two countries.
Weah, 51, has among his main challenges to improve employment and education in Liberia, as well as achieving true national unity after the civil war between 1997 and 2003 that left some 250,000 fatalities in the country.
