A new UN intervention brigade made up of 3,000 troops have been mobilized to the Democratic Republic of Congo city of Goma to subdue the rebels who were said to have killed civilians surrounding the region.

COAFRICA news correspondence have it that the UN has given residents of the Democratic Republic of Congo city of Goma 48 hours to disarm, given the  Intervention Team the mandate to use lethal force against the rebels if they fail to do so.

However, the UN mission in the DR Congo, Monusco, has given everyone except soldiers in Goma and surrounding areas 1400 GMT on Thursday to surrender their weapons to the city's UN base, warning that anyone caught after this would be considered a rebel.

It has been established that the idea of the new security zone is to establish a clear limit which the M23 must not tamper with to avoid the reaction of the new intervention brigade and the regular Munosco peacekeeping troops.

The UN henceforth forbids the M23 rebels accused of causing civilian casualties from the airport, the refugee camps and the military bases of both the UN and the army, given that up to 70,000 people have been displaced by recent fighting between the rebels and the army, with many fleeing to neighboring Uganda.
