The Lagos State Government and a United Kingdom firm , Low Energy Designs Limited , on Monday entered into an agreement to construct 10,000 streetlights covering 300 kilometres across the state .
The deal , which also includes the provision of about 500 jobs and construction of LED lighting and Hybrid Energy Power Assembly Plant in Epe, is estimated at $ 7m (about N2 .52bn ), and is expected to be delivered in the next 12 months.
Speaking at the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on the partnership at the Lagos House , Alausa , Ikeja, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode said the development was a positive paradigm shift in the provision of streetlights for the state .
Ambode , who was represented by the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources , Mr . Olawale Oluwo , said the successful commencement of the partnership signposted positive progress to the Light Up Lagos Project .
He said, “ We are setting a new chart for what streetlighting , installation , management and control will be like in Lagos in the future .
“ We have about 33,000 streetlights in Lagos under the Lagos State Electricity Board . Now , the LED UK will give us about 10,000 streetlights. So, technically, they are going to be having about 31 per cent of our entire streetlight infrastructure and this is a significant development .”
Earlier, Chief Executive Officer of LED UK Limited, Mr . Alan Parker, said over the next 12 months, a British and Nigerian consortium would work to repair major roads in the state with the urban regeneration project in Ikoyi , Ikeja and Victoria Island.
“ The N7 m LED lighting and Hybrid Energy Power Assembly Plant in Epe will also offer testing , training and education programmes on renewable technology, ” Parker said.
