The University of Zambia on Wednesday disconnected itself from the news of a UNESCO-funded-course on witchcraft supposedly commencing at the university soon.

In a press statement made available to Lusaka Times that published the original story, the Uiversity’s Public Relations Manager, Damaseke Chibale, said the University made it clear that ‘witchcraft’ is a crime in Zambia.

“Witchcraft is a crime in Zambia as prescribed in Chapter 90 of the Laws of Zambia (The Witchcraft Act.)

He said in line with the Witchcraft Act, the University of Zambia Senate would not approve such a purported degree programme.

He, however, added that there is a potential new programme in the works called Intangible Cultural Heritage, also funded by UNESCO but it is yet to be developed and approved by the University of Zambia Senate.
