Vice President (North Central) of the Historical Society of Nigeria(HSN) and Professor of History, Federal University Lafia, Prof. Okpeh Okpeh has stated that the Bring Back History project is directed towards producing a new generation of Nigerians with a rich sense of history.

He made the disclosure while speaking with CEOAfrica media team in Kaduna on Wednesday.

"Today Nigeria is battling with all manner of challenges, we have observed and rightly too because we are convinced that part of the problems we have that have become very serious challenges to our development process is because we don't have a good sense of history. Now bringing back history to schools, we are trying to produce a new generation of historians that will be conscious about their past, that will be knowledgeable about where they are from the point of view of where they came from that will have ideas and values that will transform the society," he said.

According to Okpeh, Nigeria can't move forward unless it has new values that are informed by a deep sense of history.

He said, "We are seeing that bringing history back to school - which is expected to commence by this September - the history text that will be used to teach our children has already been produced by the society.

"We are going to be emphasizing not just aspects of our differences but those things that unite us. Indeed it is so important now more than ever before because the challenges the country is facing today, it is only a deep sense of history that can inform us that we were never like this".

He opined that a lack of sense of history has been a major factor of disunity as we have it today.

"Bringing back history is directed at solving this problem because we are going to create new citizens from these children that have deep knowledge of the history of their country. Until we are able to achieve that, we can not have a Nigeria that had a broader outlook beyond its immediate environment. It is only that knowledge that can provide such a framework," he said.

He added that nations of the world emphasize on been together, urging Nigeria to learn from that. He affirmed that our differences should actually be a source of strength adding that that was what our founding fathers were emphasizing when they said "Unity in Diversity".
