The Historical Society of Nigeria (HSN) - the oldest academic association in Nigeria has been lending her voice in important societal discuss over the years. It has been at the fore front of promoting Nigerian history.

Knowledge of Nigerian history however suffered a set back about three (3) decades ago as government policy led to the removal of History as a subject in the school curriculum. According to the Society, some of the rot in our society today can be traced to this singular move. The younger generation, have mostly demonstrated the effect of a shallow sense of history as can be seen in today's Nigeria, so much distrust, divisiveness, lack of morals and many other vices.

The HSN have since set out to rectify this anomaly by appealing to the government to see that the issue is properly addressed. Different government have since come and gone and the leadership of HSN have also changed but much progress was not made on that front until recently.

The current President of the HSN, Prof. CBN Ogbogbo on assumption of office took it upon himself to pursue this course of returning history back to school by all means necessary - it was that dear to him. According to him, they had to device another way in trying to achieve this particular objective. And it is no surprise that under his leadership, we shall be seeing History return to our schools.

Prof. Ogbogbo is indeed a relentless goal getter and he has demonstrated this time and again, he has been able to reposition the HSN as he has remained firm in defending the tradition. His ingenuity has breathed a new lease of life to the HSN.

No doubt, with someone like Prof. Ogbogbo and others with like mind at the helm of affairs of the HSN, Nigerian history will continue to thrive.
