South Africa and Mozambique Ministers to Discuss Rhino Poaching in Maputo

South Africa’s Minister for Environmental Affairs, Edna Molewa and the Mozambican Minister of Tourism Carvalho Muaria, will meet to discuss about Rhino Poaching in Maputo on Friday. This was as a wake up measure to tackle Rhino poachers in South Africa, with a record of 408 Rhinos poached since the beginning of the year.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by the South African Environmental Affairs spokesperson Albie Modise said that the meeting between the two ministers was expected to focus on the Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area established in 2002, with an emphasis on the Rhino poaching presently affecting South Africa.

He said the Kruger National Park is the worst hit by poachers with a total of 265 Rhinos in this year alone, as 56 poachers has been arrested so far.

He said” Three suspected poachers were arrested in the Pretoriusskop few days ago following an intelligence-driven operation by the SA police Service, South African National Parks rangers and the park’s environmental crimes investigation unit.”

Furthermore, he said “The groups were allegedly involved in five poaching incidents in the Pretoriuskop region, as well as several armed robberies in Hazyview, Mpumalanga. The number of people arrested on the Rhino poaching-related changes countrywide totals 121.A total of 27 alleged poachers have been arrested in KwaZulu-Natal, 21 in Limpopo, 8 in North West, 6 in Mpumalanga and 3 in Gauteng. Of these, five are alleged couriers.
