The African Academy of Languages (ACALAN) workshop on "Harmonization of the Writing System of the Betifang, Lingala, Kinkongo Vehicular Cross-border Languages" was held in Congo.
The workshop was declared open by the Honourable Minister of Culture and Arts of the Republic of Congo, Astrid Madiya.
Participants at the workshop included members of the Beti-fang, Kikongo and lingala, Vehicular Cross-border Language Commissions; ACALAN's National Structures (focal points) from the countries in which the languages concerned are spoken; Staff of the Secretariat; Representatives of the Assembly of Academicians of ACALAN from the region; Representatives of the Ministries of Culture and Education of the Republic of Congo; Representatives of UNESCO/OIF/SIL and other organisations dealing with languages and culture and education of the Republic of Congo; or in countries in which the languages concerned are spoken.
At the end of the workshop, differences in orthographic practices in the languages concerned were harmonized; The various principles and practices of the languages were evaluated; A standardised form of writing for each of the languages were developed; Harmonised rules of grammar were also developed.
