More than 300 commercial motorcyclists yesterday stormed the office of Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River State, damage doors, windows and attacked security personnel and employees.
They were protesting the alleged killing of their colleague by the task force on special services.
The incident occurred while the governor and his officials were in Bakassi LGA for his second term campaigns.
The commercial motorcyclists took the member who was said to have been beaten unconscious, to the governor’s office. He died while being taken to a health facility. The protesters stormed the governor’s office and overpowered an unarmed NSCDC man and two policemen.
They destroyed the main gate, tore the official security registers, went for the main entrance and smashed the glass doors of the office.
Armed soldiers from the 13 Brigade of the Nigerian Army and policemen later arrived and shot into the air to disperse them.
The state police spokesman, Irene Ugbo, said the dead member fell from his motorcycle and died when the task force team wanted to arrest him for violating government’s ban on use of commercial motorcycles on major roads.
