Edo State police command have apprehended a man, 50,  for allegedly killing the father of his girlfriend during a fight.

Ateka Iyare was among 82 suspects paraded at the weekend by the state’s Commissioner of Police,Hakeem Odumosun, for crimes ranging from cultism, murder, fraud and armed robbery in the state.

It was gathered that the incident happened at Oza community in Orhiowon local government of the state when the suspect used a machete to attack the deceased, Matthew Idahosa, during a fight over the deceased’s daughter.

In an interview with news reporters, at the state police command, Iyare said Idahosa died from injuries he sustained during a fight between him and the suspect.

“We had problem because of his daughter who wanted to befriend me. When she mentioned the issue to me, I told her that I don’t want any problem from her father but she insisted that she wants to befriend me because I am not married, after much pressure from her I agreed.

“One day the father saw me giving her money and when he asked the girl what was happening between us, she lied to her father who didn’t make any further comment,” the suspect said.

He added that, “After the encounter, I thought the matter was over as I was offered food during my visit to her house, but I was surprised when the deceased reported the matter to the police.

“He was told at the police station to leave me alone when I finally went to the station after hiding for a while. He then said I must pay the money he has been spending on the issue. Afterward, he then went to my mother warning that he was going to kill me anytime he saw me and I also told him that both of us will die.

“After that, we met on the road while he was returning from the farm, immediately he saw me, he stopped his motorcycle and picked a machete to fight me. I then picked up a stick and fight ensued and in the process the cutlass fell from his hand, I collected it and inflicted injuries on him and he later died.”

The suspect said after inflicting machete cuts on him, he took the deceased’s motorcycle and escaped with it to Afuze in Owan East local government of the state to evade arrest.

“But this month, I was arrested at Afuze where I was hiding and brought to Benin. I regret my action,” he added.
