2019 Election eve: Police discover bomb in Delta

The Delta state police command say they have uncovered an improvised explosive device (bomb) along the Ughelli/Patani road in Ughelli North Local Government Area of the state.

The state Commissioner of Police, Adeyinka Adeleke, who spoke to reporters on Friday, called on the people of the state vote peacefully in today’s presidential and National Assembly elections.

Adeleke said the bomb was discovered by the Anti Robbery Squad led by its Commander, SP Masoyi Dadi, on Thursday night.

According to the statement by its acting spokesman, Chuks Oresewezie, the state police command said the  IED was discovered  in an unregistered white Toyota Hilux  which refused to stop.

The CP said they had launched investigations into he incident.

He said, “On 21/2/2019 at about 1945hrs, the team while carrying out a stop and search along Ughelli-Patani road intercepted an unregistered white Toyota Hilux, which refused to stop.

“The team gave the vehicle a hot chase and the two occupants abruptly stopped and escaped into a nearby bush. Upon a thorough search of the vehicle, 128 pieces of 60mm.156 kg emulsion chemical substances and five pieces of electric detonators concealed in large  black bags in the vehicle were recovered.

“The Items, which are suspected to be explosive components, have been handed over to Bomb Disposal Unit who have since confirmed them as such.”
