LATEST: 15 lost lives in Somalia's Islamist extremist attack

A gun battle between security forces and Al-Shabaab militants in the capital, Mogadishu, has reportedly left at least 15 people dead. The group has recently stepped up its armed rebellion against  “enemies of Islam.”

Somalia';s security forces have ended a deadly siege by Islamist militants of a government building in the Somali capital of Mogadishu, police said on Saturday.

This is the second  such attack in three weeks and the latest in a campaign of violence by Al-Shabaab militants.

How the attack unfolded:

Militants detonated a car bomb close to the country';s labor and works ministries on Saturday morning.

At least five Al-Shabaab fighters stormed the building and a gunbattle broke out and left fifteen people dead, police told the Reuters news agency.

Ten others were wounded in the attack, including the deputy minister of labor, according to Capt. Mohamed Hussein from Somalia';s security forces.

And within minutes, Al-Shabaab issued a statement claiming responsibility for the attack.
