The Catholic Church in Uganda will not allow polyethylene bags in and around the premises of Namugongo Martyrs Shrine, starting this year, June 3.

According to the Chairman of the country’s  Episcopal Conference, Bishop Joseph Antony Zziwa, the initiative dubbed ‘Free Uganda Martyrs Shrine Namugongo of kaveera’ is intended to boost the Church’s commitment to the conservation of the environment.

The Church is spearheading the campaign in partnership with the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), VIVO Energy, and next Media Services.

Bishop Zziwa inaugurated the campaign during a press-conference at Uganda Catholic Secretariat, Nsambya on Friday, May 10.

The function was graced by the Executive Director of NEMA, Dr. Tom Okurut, the head of Legal at Vivo Energy Stephen Chomi, the Chief Strategy Officer of Next Media Services, Joseph Kigozi and the Secretary General of the Uganda Episcopal Conference, Msgr John Baptist Kauta.
