Team Nigeria won their second weightlifting gold on Sunday after Oluwatoyin Adesanmi lifted a total of 207kg (92kg in snatch, 115kg in clean and jerk) to lead the women’s 63kg class.

While she was celebrating, her compatriot Obioma Okoli lifted the same total weight of 207kg (90kg in snatch, 117kg in clean and jerk) to win silver in the same class.

It was a different story for boxer Waheed Shogbamu and table tennis icon Segun Toriola as they went down to their respective opponents on Sunday.

Shogbamu, competing in the men’s light welterweight (64kg) class, beat Toaua Bangke of Kiribati 3-2 in their round of 32 fight on Sunday, but later that day Shogbamu lost with similar margin to Wales’ Zack Davies in the round of 16.

Toriola on his part lost 3-2 to Singapore ’s Ning Gao in the men’s table tennis semi-final.

Gao took the lead, winning the first two games 11-7, 11-8 before Toriola fought back to win the third and fourth games 9-11, 7-11. The fifth set, however, went Gao’s way to knock the Nigerian veteran out of the game.

In women’s long jump T37/38 decided on Sunday, 33-year old Latifat Balogun jumped 3.54 metres to finish 10th ahead of compatriot, Igolukumo Ekioukeowei, who recorded the least distance of 2.37 metres after two failed attempts.

Australia’s Jodi Elkington won gold in the contest with 4.39m, while England’s Bethy Wooodward took silver with 4.00m. Namibia’s 24-year old Johanna Benson won bronze with a personal best of 3.82m to win her nation’s first medal in Glasgow.

Hammer thrower, Queen Obisesan, also failed to qualify from women’s Group A on Sunday as she finished 11th with her 57.16 metres throw.
