Prof. Muhammad Nur Alkal declared dead

The death of a delegate, Prof. Muhammad Nur Alkali was announced on Saturday by the Secretariat of the National Conference. He represented the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs at the 2014 National Conference in Abuja.

The announcement by the Assistant Secretary, Media and Communications of the conference, Mr. Akpandem James said Alkali died in his residence in Maiduguri on Friday night at the age of 68.

A Professor of History, Professor Muhammad Nur Alkali obtained his doctorate degree in 1978. He served as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri from 1985 to 1992 and was appointed as Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Jos in 1992. His tenure elapsed in 1999. he was the Director of the Centre for Trans-Saharan Studies, University of Maiduguri before his demise.

James said that the Chairman of conference, Justice Idris Kutigi, was “deeply distressed by this sad development and on behalf of the Conference Secretariat and Delegates, he has expressed his deep condolences to the family of the late Professor, and the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, the platform which Alkali represented at the Conference.”

 The Chairman of conference, Justice Idris Kutigi also prayed the Almighty to grant eternal repose to the soul of the deported.

A Professor of History and two-term Vice Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri (1985 – 1992), the late Alkali was Director General of the Nigeria Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) and Chairman, Presidential Advisory Committee under the administration of
General Sani Abacha.
