The Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Oyo State, Barr. Mutiu Agboke has call on Christians to always participate actively in any election as this is a key to the development of our lasting democracy.

Barr Agboke made the call while delivering his welcome address at the 2019 Charismas carol of INEC in Ibadan ,Oyo state.

The event which was the second edition in the series was with the theme: “Sustaining Good Governance: Christian Leaders on Call”.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in his welcome speech stated that the last year maiden edition with the theme: “The Role of Christian towards the Conduct of 2019 General Elections” played a very impactful role which made Oyo state to have a credible, free and fair elections, that led to winning all the 33 electoral tribunal petitions including the Governorship election which was eventually determined by the Supreme Court.

This year Christmas carol with the topic ‘Sustaining Good Governance; Christian leaders on call’ is a way collective collaboration to ensure sustenance of good governance. This should not be left only in the hands of our political leaders and other stakeholders in the electioneering process, but rather Christians’ active participation is also a key to the development of our lasting democracy.

According to him, “Democracy thrives better where good governance is the rule and not an exception. The major problems that have consistently hindered good governance in Nigeria since independence included but not limited to ethnicity, religious intolerance and corruption.

Presently in Nigeria, elections are marred with violence, caused by politicians. This should not be so, hence the need for a change of orientation towards the conduct of elections in our country, Christian leaders inclusive”.

“For us to sustain good governance in Nigeria, religious leaders have to play formidable roles” he concluded.

The event was marked with different Christmas songs.
