The University of Ibadan Professor of criminology from the department of Sociology, faculty of Social Science, Professor Adeyinka Aderinto has identified sheer negligence of social roles to Nigeria’s youthful populace as a major cause of ravaging insecurity.

Aderinto said Nigeria’s youths have been left on the fringe by those who should nurture and cater for them and are now fighting back.

Professor Aderinto who was the immediate past Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) University of Ibadan and the current Head of Department of Sociology stated this while delivering the 482 inaugural lecture of the University titled “On the Fringe of the Society”

According to Aderinto, the pain of the youths have become compounded by widespread poverty, unemployment and economic problems which continue to characterise Nigerian State.

To the Criminologist, setting up many security outfits without alleviating poverty and tackling unemployment will yield no sustainable security.

The Criminologist advised government at all levels to reduce the overwhelming emphasis on wealth as a symbol of success in Nigeria as this has become reasons why many youths take to crime and criminality.

“Efforts should be made by federal and state governments to reduce the overwhelming emphasis on wealth as a symbol of success in our country. Many of our youths now associate success with owning of several houses and care making them unable to come to term with leaving a less-glamorous life. The rapid socialisation and nurturance functions which the family and school are suppose to perform are becoming difficult as rapid urbanisation, widespread poverty and economic problems continue to characterise the Nigerian Situation. today, due to the sheer negligence of social roles to our youthful populace, they have been pushed to the Fringe. They are now fighting back

The double receptions which, at the end of the lecture, were held at the Faculty of Social Science and the Senior Staff Club University of Ibadan were filled to capacity with throngs of well-wishers who were entertained with music, entertainment and refreshments.

The Professor while speaking with CEOAFRICA said “my topic actually based on my areas of specialization, the area of criminology, deviance and social problems which are so numerous in Nigeria now. I tried to put all my years of research which has been largely based on the vulnerable in the society, so I tried to put them together under the topic “On the Fringe of the Society”.

He recommended that the federal, state and local government do what is possible for them to do in the alleviation of poverty which is very important, as adage has it that “an ideal man is a devil workshop”

“Government should do more than what they are currently doing, what they have done are not enough, we know that they have some programs in terms of alleviating poverty but the impact of the those programs are not yet felt, instead we have the poverty and unemployment rate escalating. When the two figures are high, social problems will continue to rise” he concluded.
