Ugandan Health personnel have advised that health facilities should be used at delivery to curb the nasty health cases of hydrocephalus.

According to Derek Johnson, the Executive Director of CURE Children Hospital in Mbale, Uganda, hydrocephalus is a condition in which the cerebrospinal fluid collects in the brain and causes a fluid blockage in the brain.

Dr. Peter Ssenyonga, a paediatric neurosurgeon at CURE Hospital, stated that though hydrocephalus can be congenital (inborn) or acquired (occur at any age), 65% of the hydrocephalus cases result from infections.

He further revealed that bacterial infection in the blood stream (neonatal Sepsis), infections of the covering of the brain and spinal cord (meningitis) and infection of the fluid spaces inside the brain (ventriculitis) can also cause hydrocephalus.

However, other causes of hydrocephalus include bleeding in brain, head injuries, stroke and tumors
