A report by the World Health organisation (WHO) has revealed that the death toll of Ebola Virus Disease victims has risen to 1,900.

WHO executive, Margaret Chan, who revealed this said that there have been 3,500 confirmed or probable cases in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia; and that the outbreaks were racing ahead of the control measures in the mentioned countries.

She also said that more that 20,000 people could be infected if the outbreak is not brought under control.

Ms. Chan described the outbreak as “the largest and most severe and most complex we have ever seen.”

“No-one, even outbreak responders with experience dating back to 1976, to 1995, people that were directly involved with those outbreaks, none of them has ever seen anything like it,” she said.

In a measure to tackle the fatality rate of the virus, WHO will meet with delegates today in Geneva, in order to examine the most promising treatments and to discuss how to fast-track testing and production.

Those expected to be present at the meeting are disease control experts, medical researchers, officials from affected countries, and specialists in medical ethics.

About $600m (N102 billion) is needed to fight the virus, which has killed 7 people in Nigeria already with at least 18 infection cases.
