Nigeria: Borno Displaced Refugees Receive Relief Material

Abuja — The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has distributed a consignment of relief items to about 12 000 people taking refuge in two camps in Maiduguri.

The camps are located at the National Youth Service Corps Orientation camp and Yerwa Government Girls Secondary School.

They were opened to provide temporary shelter for the displaced persons from Bama, Kawuri and Damboa.

Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency, Muhammad Sani Sidi, who was represented by the Director of Planning Research and Forecasting, Dr Zannah Muhammad, said at the presentation of the relief items that the Federal Government was concerned about the condition of the displaced persons.

He said the agency was committed to doing everything possible to ease their plight.

He said the choice of the two camps was based on the facilities and security available.

He said besides the relief delivered to the camps, the agency would provide further assistance to the people after the restoration of stability and their return back to their homes.

The director assured the continued support of the agency to the refugees at the camp and urged the people to remain calm and law abiding.

Receiving the items on behalf of the refugees, the Chairman of the Borno State Committee on Displaced Persons, Alhaji Usman Jidda Shuwa, appreciated the support of the Federal Government towards addressing the plight of the people in the camps.

He said the humanitarian intervention from NEMA would go a long way to ease condition of the displaced people.

The humanitarian relief delivered to the camps in six trucks are made up of food and non food items such as bags of rice, bags of grains, millets, beans, mattresses, blankets, sanitary items, detergents, drugs, and clothing for women and children, soaps and noodles among others.
