The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday said that 1,529,636 voters were registered to vote in the Adamawa bye-election scheduled for 11 October.

Mr Kasim Gaidam, the state Resident Electoral Commissioner, said this in Yola during the distribution of soft copies of the voter register to 13 political parties which fielded candidates for the governorship by-election.

Gaidam said the exercise was to assist the political parties to add value to their political campaigns.

“The register of voters for the state stands at 1,529,636 and there are six units in Yola North, Mubi and Numan LGAs respectively,” he said.

The commissioner said that INEC headquarters was yet to communicate with it on what the arrangement would be for units that had less than 50 voters.

Gaidam said that the update of the voters’ register would start in the state at the end of October.

According to him, the continuous voters’ registration will give opportunity to those who have not registered and those with challenges to register and obtain their Permanent Voter Cards for the 2015 general election.

He advised the political parties to use the register given to them positively for the good conduct of the election.

According to the commissioner, youths between the age group of 18 and 35 years constitute over 43 per cent of total voters registered in the state.

He said that no one would be allowed to vote without the permanent voter’s card in the 11 October bye-election in the state with exception of Adamawa North Senatorial District.

“In the Adamawa North Senatorial District, eligible registered voters will be allowed to vote with their temporary voters’ cards for obvious reason,” Gaidam said.

NAN reports that the political parties that fielded candidates to contest the bye-election include APGA, KOWA, PDP, APC and SDP.

Others are MPPP, APA, PPN, UDP, PPA, CPP, AA and AD.
