International Women’s Day (IWD), is celebrated each year on March 8. The celebration started early 1900s.
IWD is “a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality.”
According to the official IWD website, the theme of 2021 is “Let’s all choose to challenge.” “We can all choose to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality. We can all choose to seek out and celebrate women‘s achievements. Collectively, we can all help create an inclusive world. From challenge comes change, so let’s all choose to challenge.”
In this year’s celebration, our question is “How do you get more women in charge so that one day they could be leading the continent?
There are, of course, examples of women in charge. Recently, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, Nigeria’s former finance minister, had become head of the World Trade Organisation.
Not only is she the first woman but she’s also the first African to get the job.
Ellen Johnson Sirleaf was the first democratically elected President of Africa and led Liberia for 12 years.
Women are doing great things, they are doing wonderfully well and if given a chance, they are ready at all times.
