The Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), New Era, has frowned at the 72-hour eviction notice issued by the Arewa Youth Assembly (AYA) to the Yoruba people living in the North to vacate the zone, describing it as uncalled for.
In a statement signed by the National Public Relations Officer of the OPC New Era, Adesina Akinpelu, and made available to pressmen in Ibadan on Sunday, the group said the Yoruba people are not against other tribes.
He said “Yorubas and Hausas have never been enemies to one another and Arewa youth group should go back to history and check how the two tribes have worked together to achieve what is called Nigeria today.”
“The statement credited to one Mohammed Danlami of AYA is uncalled for.
“In as much as we want to become independent, Yorubas are not against people of other tribes who are law abiding or those doing legitimate businesses in Yorubaland. We will not support anybody or group that tries to instigate Yoruba people against law abiding people of other tribes.”
The statement added that the OPC had no grouse against the group but would not relent in its demand that criminal elements should exit Yoruba land.
“The Fulani had tormented and seen to the collapse of Yoruba empires until the united Yoruba forces sent them back. We must come together to speak against our oppressors, who are operating as if they are above the law of the land.”
