As political rallies continue to hold across Nigeria ahead of the 2015 general elections, no fewer than four persons have been reported killed in Lagos Island, western Nigeria on Saturday, 20 September, 2014.
According to reports, the tragic incident happened as a result of a riot that broke out after a political rally held by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, at the Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos on Saturday.
It was gathered that after the PDP rally, one of the most popular politicians on the Island, Otun Azeez Ashake, was killed by some unidentified men suspected to be political thugs.
According to eye witnesses’ reports, the deceased was shot dead at close range in front of his house at Isale Eko.
It was gathered that the son of the late Ashake, Usman, was also shot but is said to be alive receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in Lagos Island.
The late Ashake, before his death, is said to be a very influential member of an unnamed political group in Lagos Island.
His demise was reported to have caused a lot of chaos in Isale Eko over the weekend a situation that gave security personnel tough time before they could restore peace to the area.
A report said that in spite of deployment of several policemen and police patrol vans to the scene of the crisis, political thugs in Isale Eko still fought at intervals.
A resident in the area, who did not want his name published, informed that the clash escalated on Sunday afternoon when some miscreants suspected to be from the camp of the late Ashake, stormed the camp of one Abija and allegedly killed three persons.
