2015 Poll: CLEEN Foundation Predicts Increase in Violent Crimes

A CLEEN Foundation report on security ahead of the 2015 general election has shown that incidents of politics-induced assassinations, kidnappings, armed robbery and bombings may escalate as the political campaigns begin.

The report titled: ‘Fifth Security Threat Assessment: Towards 2015 Election (July-September 2014),’ and presented to journalists yesterday in Abuja, also showed that 29 states were experiencing various forms of tension which if not managed properly could lead to chaos.

In her welcome remarks, Executive Director of CLEEN Foundation, Mrs. Kemi Okenyodo, while referring to the violence which occurred following the outcome of the 2011 general election leading to the death of an estimated 800 person, said preparations for the 2015 general election must be done with a view to forestall a replay of the 2011 elections.

Okenyodo listed some questionable developments in the political arena and noted that the essence of the report was that the recent happenings in the country beg the question of whether the rights to vote can be safely exercised and the fundamental rights effectively protected by the agencies of government vested with the responsibility of the 2015 elections.

According to the report, with the 2015 presidential election billed to hold on February 14, 2015, preparations for the election amidst increasing concern of high level of insecurity and violence on election days and days after the election.

The report listed Benue, Plateau, Nasarawa, Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Taraba Kaduna, Kano, Zamfara Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Edo, Enugu, Imo and Lagos as states with very high chances of insecurity and violence.

While Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Katsina, Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Ondo, Oyo, Ogun, Kogi, Niger and Sokoto States also have chances of violence, only Kwara, Kebbi, Cross River, Bayelsa, Osun and Ekiti are relatively peaceful.
