South Sudan Army Detained General Over Regional Abuse

From South Sudan, CEOAFRICA.com gathered that the Country’s army have detained the commander- in-charge of troops, in Pibor county located in Jonglei state, and are looking into accusations that soldiers under his command killed civilians and committed other human right abuses.

Speaking to confirm the arrest, army spokesman Philip Aguer said,”Because of some allegations that some civilians have been killed, some properties were destroyed and looting took place…the commander of the area has to answer.

He also said that he has received information on an incident which two soldiers were alleged to have opened fire on four civilians walking to Pibor town in late July. It was reported that two women died in that particular attack and the soldiers involved were immediately detained.

Aguer said that the army will be ready to investigate additional reports of soldiers shooting civilians looting property.

Sources disclosed that the general involved, James Otong, has been relieved of his command, and will be formally charged when the investigation into the matter has been settled.

A human right group accused the army of South Sudan of committing serious abuses against civilians in its anti-insurgency campaign in Jonglei state.
