WEDNESDAY- 10th November, 2021: The Senate in its latest sitting on Tuesday lamented the collapse of the 21-storey building in the Ikoyi area of Lagos State.
The senator representing Lagos Central Senatorial District, Oluremi Tinubu had raised a point of order  on the matter.
The house observed a minute silence in honour of the victims of the building collapse.
So far about 42 persons were killed after the 21-storey building collapsed last week in Ikoyi, Lagos.
Tinubu said 16 persons were rescued alive, while efforts were ongoing to rescue others still trapped in the ill-fated building.
The Senate President Ahmad Lawan, in his remarks, called on all professional bodies to ensure that only competent and qualified professionals were involved in construction works.
He  urged the Council of Registered Engineers of Nigeria and other institutes in the construction industry to ensure that only professionals were engaged for building projects.
Lawan said, “This is one collapse too many and it is unfortunate. This is to call on the leadership of COREN and other professional bodies in the construction industry to maintain the highest degree of competence.
“They should also ensure that only qualified and certified professionals are engaged in construction to avert the type of tragedy that happened in Ikoyi.”
