The Jos Repertory Theatre will be in Abuja on Monday to perform, ‘The Bonds of Interest’ as part of celebrations for the 9th edition of the Spanish Cultural Week.

Amb. Alfonso Barnuevo, Spanish envoy to Nigeria, said that it was a happy challenge for the embassy to put the event together and get Nigerians to appreciate Spain from various dimensions.
“The week is tied to the celebration of Spain’s National Day and Nigeria is the only place where it is celebrated this way,” he stated, adding that it is interesting that the two countries work together the way they do.
Deputy Head of Mission, Guillaume Monfort, said the comedy tone of the piece by Nobel Laureate, Jacinto Benavente, fits well with the character of the Jos-based group.
The week-long event will also feature an arts exhibition cum competition, ‘Dalí: Dreams on Canvas’, inspired by Spain’s foremost artist, Salvador Dalí, whose works were mostly inspired by his dreams. This will culminate into an awards ceremony where winning works will be recognised and prizes given to awardees.
The arts competition organised in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the death of Spain’s father of Surrealism, Dalí, will hold on Tuesday.
The group, which is known for its epic performances and translation of centuries old works to modern day realities, will perform the piece by Jacinto Benavente at the Lagos Room of the Transcorp Hilton Hotel.
Cultural attachée Eva Barta said of the 80 entries received from across Nigeria through the support of the National Gallery of Art, 32 works made it to the final selection and will be exhibited at the Kaduna Mezzanine.
“From here the three final winners will emerge with the first visiting Spain for the International Contemporary Art Fair (ARCO) and museums, while the second and third winners will receive N75, 000 and N50, 000 respectively,” she said.
The climax of the fiesta will be a flamenco performance also at the Hilton, which will feature Spain’s Anabel Veloso Dance Company that will be performing for the fourth time in Nigeria and will be performing in Bamako, Mali. The group will perform ‘Flamencoland,’ which Barnuevo said has been adopted as a UNESCO Heritage site.
