The speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure a hitch-free 2015 election.

The speaker gave this charge yesterday in Ado-Ekiti during the commissioning of the new Ekiti Governor’s Lodge (Ayoba Villa) and presentation of books detailing activities of the Governor Fayemi’s administration.

Tambuwal, who described the polls as a deciding fate of the unity of the country, said the electoral body has the capacity to conduct a poll that will be acceptable to all Nigerians.

Warning INEC against perverting the wills of Nigerians in the elections, Tambuwal said, “My expectations from INEC is that there should be election in Nigeria and it must be credible, impartial and transparent. It must display patriotism by not favouring any of the parties and respecting the will of the people for democracy to grow and for us to remain united”.

Tambuwal, who refused to comment on why the House of Representatives, particularly lawmakers from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)had frustrated an attempt to discuss the botched $15 million arms deal, said “I abide by the position of the House that the botched $15 million arms deals should not be debated.

“I have to take responsibility for whatever negative or positive meanings the people had read to our actions because that was the position of the House and I am bound by it”.

The speaker, who urged the security agencies to investigate the invasion Ado Ekiti High Court and bring the culprits to book, also said, “The attack is very unfortunate because judiciary is not only an arm of government but the last hope of the common man, which must be respected by all.

He commended Fayemi for his outstanding performance and pointed out that posterity shall judge him well as someone who brought integrity into governance in Ekiti.

Meanwhile Nobel Laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka, has described Fayemi’s sojourn in Ekiti as a ‘mystery’, considering the way he came into office and how he lost the June 21 election, while urging the incoming government to build on the legacy left behind by the governor.

Tactically commenting on the outcome of the recent governorship election, he said ”Ekiti has been a land of gallant people right from the time of the late Lt Colonel Adekunle Fajuyi.

They are men of honour and integrity and Fayemi had brought this to bare by institutionalising governance in Ekiti.

“There is something mysterious about his sojourn in Ekiti. I think everybody is mystified, but there is a clarity in the way he governed the people. But there is need for him to go and unravel the mystery and make remedies because sometimes something would happen that needs to be unravelled and only you can get to the root of it”, he said.
