Three policemen have been shot dead by unknown gunmen at a checkpoint in Ebonyi State, Southeast Nigeria.

It was learnt that the ugly incident took place on Monday night at a checkpoint on the Enugu-Abakaliki highway.

They were said to have been gunned down in front of a police station where they mounted the road block. The gunmen opened fire on the policemen as soon as they got to the scene.

Spokesperson, Ebonyi State Police Command, Loveth Odah confirmed the incident, but said she could not give details.

There have been several cases of gunmen killing policemen in Ebonyi.

In April 2021, gunmen had shot three policemen dead at checkpoint on Onuebonyi/Nwezenyi Road, Abakaliki.

In May, 2021, a police inspector was shot dead after gunmen attacked Obiozara Divisional Police Station in the Uburu Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
