Gunmen on Tuesday morning attacked a police checkpoint between Ihiala-Uli axis, in Ihiala local government area, Anambra State.
It was reported that some people were killed while others are reportedly injured.
The attack which took place around 10.30am, has forced drivers and commuters to run for their dear lives as the gunmen shot non-stop.
It was reported that all the security operatives removed their uniforms and took cover in nearby bushes and houses.
The Onitsha-Owerri expressway has been abandoned and commercial bus drivers have stopped operations for fear of being killed.
The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Ikenga Tochukwu, is yet to confirm the attack.
But one of the Senior Police officers, who spoke with newsmen in confidence, confirmed the attack.
The officer said; ‘’I’ve not heard of any death but I can tell you there were casualties during the gun battle.”
‘’The Police Commissioner, Echeng Echeng has dispatched special squad to Ihiala to quell the situation,’’ the officer added.
