Ghana President, John Dramani Mahama
It was victory for President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana and his NDC party supporters, as the much awaited Supreme Court’s judgment upheld the December 2012 election result.
The case which was broadcast live on television and radio across Ghana shows a rare sign of judicial transparency.
President John Mahama was adjudged winner of the last election after beating his main rival Nana Akufo-Addo by 50.7 percent to 47.7 percent, a result which was challenged by NPP on the ground of electoral fraud.
Sources disclosed that thousands of NDC supporters broke into songs of celebration when the verdict was made.
Reacting to the judgement, Mr Akufo-Addo urged his party supporters to accept the verdict in peace, although he expressed his disappointment about the result.
In another reaction, NDC general secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketia said the verdict justifies his party’s innocence of the electoral fraud allegation against it.
Ghanaians have been spellbound by the eight-month case, following it closely on radio and television.
