Jonathan appoints Peter Ekpendu as new Comptroller-General of prisons

President Goodluck Jonathan has appointed Peter Ekpendu the new Comptroller-General of Nigerian Prison Service.

Before his appointment, Mr. Ekpendu was the Deputy Controller-General, Administration of the Prison Service from 2012. He was the Deputy Commandant Prisons Training College Lagos from 1991 to 1994, Officer-in-Charge; Umuahia Prisons from 1995 to 1996 and Officer in charge; Owerri Prisons from 1997 to 1998. He was also the Deputy Controller of Prisons Training; Prisons Headquarters 1999.

He was later the Controller of Prisons Pension, Prisons Headquarters in 2000 and Controller of Prisons; Enugu State from 2001 to 2003, Imo State 2003-2005 and Delta State 2006. He was later promoted as Assistant Controller-General of Prisons Operations in 2008 and then deployed to Minna, Niger State as the Zonal Coordinator Zone D from 2009 to 2010. Mr. Ekpendu then became the Deputy Controller-General, Inmates’ Training and Productivity (ITP) in 2011.

He is a native of Ibeku Okwuato in Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State where he had his Primary Education at St. Patrick’s School. He proceeded for his Secondary Education at Mbaise Secondary School, Aboh Mbaise and his Teachers’ Training College Education at Azaraegbelu Teachers’ Training College Emekuku, Owerri. He later obtained a Bachelor’s degree certificate, Masters and a PHD in 1981, 1984 and 1988 respectively from the prestigious University of Nigeria Nsukka.

Mr. Ekpendu also attended the National Institute for Policy and Strategy Studies, NIPSS, Kuru Jos in 2007.
