No fewer than 1,500 school teachers, who were employed at the tail end of the immediate past administration of Adegboyega Oyetola, have been disengaged by Osun State government.
It would be recalled that the immediate past Governor Gboyega Oyetola’s administration had employed 1,500 teachers after the conduct of the state governorship election lost to Governor Ademola Adeleke.
Governor Adeleke had on his assumption of office issued an Executive Order that nullified the employment of 1,500 teachers that was hurriedly done by Oyetola.
Oyetola engaged them on July 17, 2022, a day after the declaration of Osun governorship election results.
But in a passionate appeal by the affected teachers led by one Mr. Owoyemi Abdulwasiu during a press conference held at Correspondent Chapel in Osogbo, the teachers urged the governor to exercise restraint in disengaging them on passionate ground.
Abdulwaisu disclosed that the employment of the affected teachers followed due process just as he pleaded with the governor to exercise restraint on disengaging them rather they should be allowed to continue their work which they have been assigned to do.
“We want to plead with the governor on one of the Executive Orders directed upon assumption of duty as the executive governor of Osun State on the 27th November, 2022.
“The order stated the nullification of 1,500 recently employed teachers made by the immediate past administration after July 17th governorship election.
“We would like to plead to you to reconsider this order for the good people of Osun State particularly the 1,500 newly employed teachers for the Basic (Primary) and Post-Basic (Secondary) levels of education in Osun State.
“The contributions of these education officers/teachers towards the development of their respective places of primary assignment and the state at large since assumption of duty as testified by parents, teachers and the students alike are of no small measure”, he stated.
Reacting, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Community and Communications, Mr. Tunde Busari, said all illegally employed workers remain disengaged.
He said those illegally employed by former Governor Gboyega Oyetola are no longer in the employment of the state government and no amount of blackmail can change that reality the state government announced.
Busari noted that Mr. Oyetola deliberately padded the state payroll with APC members to create stage for deeper financial crisis, conflict and disharmony.
“Those engaging in demonstrations are APC members smuggled into the state payroll by former Governor Oyetola. By virtue of the Executive Order issued by Mr. Governor, those illegally employed remain sacked and are no longer staff of the state government. No amount of demonstration and blackmail can change that reality.
“We have the details of plan by APC to deploy its disengaged members for demonstration. However, the people of Osun State are in the know of the whole situation especially the several warnings by the PDP while in opposition. We warned against colluding with Mr. Oyetola during those last days when the former governor was issuing employment letters despite the state’s inability to pay staff salaries.
“Those APC members are now playing the script. They have failed from the beginning as this administration will not bow to unjustified demands from those who collaborated to deepen Osun financial woes”, he stated.
