The wife of the president, Dame Patience Goodluck Jonathan, has charged women in the South-South region, especially in Rivers State, to ensure that their husbands promote peace in their various states.
She gave the charge in Portharcourt, Rivers State, yesterday, during the official commissioning of the South-South zonal office of Women for Change and Development Initiative (WCDI). WCDI is non-governmental organisation (NGO), established by the first lady to better the lot of Nigerian women.
Dame Jonathan appealed to the women to always advise their husbands to embrace peace in the interest of the country.
She said the Federal Government, under Goodluck Jonathan, had high regard for women, adding that it accounted for appointment of many women into various top positions in the country.
According to the first lady, it was the first time in the history of the country that more women were given the opportunity to serve the country in various capacities. Mrs. Jonathan said she would not relent until 35 percent of political positions were occupied by women. She, however, urged them to continue to give her husband support and pledge not to disappoint them.
According to her, besides the commissioning of the zonal office, she was in the South-South Zone to empower the women the way she had done in other zones.
