The wife of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr. Mrs. Aisha Buhari has called on stakeholders and government at all levels to rise to the global challenge of ensuring general equality, empowerment and women/girl child participation in sporting activities.

Mrs Aisha Buhari made this call at the unveiling and presentation of trophy for the 2021 International Women Swimming Championship and Rural development organized by the Women Awards Championship International and Nigeria Aquatics Federation, in collaboration with the African First Ladies Peace Mission, to honor the First Lady and wives of governors of the 36 states.

The First Lady who was represented by HajiyaMairo Al-makura, Special Adviser to the First Lady on African Ladies Peace Mission, commended the giant stride of President MuhamaduBuhari in his support towards ending all forms of domestic violence against women and girl child in the country.

Aisha Buhari noted her desire to empower the women and girl-child, most especially the less privileged to ensure that they are protected and adequately empowered with the skills needed to better the next generation.

The first lady maintained that the aim is to break the existing social barrier against rural women thereby giving the girl child a sense of belonging in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) as one of her core mission to all women across all strata.

“It is imperative to appeal to all stakeholders to rise to the global challenge of ensuring achievement of women/girl child participation in sporting activities and empowerment in line with the objectives of SDG,” the First Lady added.

While speaking with CEOAFRICA, Hajia Al-makura stressed the First Lady’s commitment towards ensuring a successful competition that will be a model to the African continent, adding that the competition is another opportunity to reflect on the condition of women both at the global and national levels with a view to providing a way forward for the betterment of Nigerian women

She however enjoined Nigerian Youths to be part of the activities, “because it would go a long way in fostering unity amongst us in Nigeria,” she stated.
