At the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the recently held event of the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD), Ibadan branch, Prof. Aina Adeogun, was re-elected as the Coordinator of OWSD Ibadan.
During the meeting which was conducted after the conferment of awards at the event, 63 members unanimously voted for Prof. Aina Adeogun, a Professor of Toxicology at the University of Ibadan, and her executive team to lead the organization again for another two-year tenure.
In her acceptance speech, Adeogun said “the executive committee is a bit reluctant to say thank you because we had all been looking forward to handing over to a new set of leaders. But we thank you for the show of love and the confidence you have reposed in us; and we appeal for volunteers to understudy this executive committee so that during the next election, we will have people that can continue with what we have done and even do better than us.”
Among her many achievements, Prof. Aina pioneered research on Endocrine disruption in Aquatic organisms and developed protocols for molecular and cellular Toxicology in Aquatic organisms towards water and food safety especially for the vulnerable subpopulation (women and children) in tropical environments with a dependence on natural fish food as preferred protein sources.
Membership of the Ibadan branch of the association comprises over 350 members from the University of Ibadan in all faculties and institutes, and sister research institutes like National Institute for Horticultural Research (NIHORT); The National Centre for Genetic Resources and Biotechnology (NACGRAB); Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria (CRIN); Federal College of Animal Health and Production Technology (FCAH&PT); the Polytechnic Ibadan; Nigerian Institute Of Social And Economic Research (NISER), Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria (FRIN), among others.
OWSD Nigeria National Chapter was founded in 2010 with many branches across universities in the country. The organisation is a voluntary international organization of women researchers aimed at fostering collaboration among women in Universities, Research Institutes and Allied Institutions towards ensuring research activities focused on societal growth and development. It also provides research training and networking opportunities for women scientists throughout the developing world at different stages in their careers.
Beyond career progression, the organisation also sees to ensure balance between work and social life for members in a bid to promote better productivity individually and collectively.
