In partnership with Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) and Fidson Healthcare Plc, the organized public rally against malnutrition by the West African Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (WASPEN) will hold today, Tuesday, June 4, 2024.

The health awareness walk, set to mount a public campaign against malnutrition, is also aimed at ramping up awareness on malnutrition and promoting healthier living in Nigeria.

As part of the activities lined up for the day, a team of WASPEN, LUTH, and Fidson executives and public health stakeholders will engage in health walk, nutrition education, distribution of promotional materials, and special focus on Astymin blood tonic.

The proposed health walk will commence at 8:30 a.m. from Hall 36 Carpark through Ojuelegba-Bishop Street and then back to LUTH.

The nutrition education and conference will feature the First Lady of Lagos State, Her Excellency, Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu; MD/CEO of Fidson Healthcare Plc, Fidelis Ayebae; Chief Medical Director of LUTH, Prof. Wasiu ‘Lanre Adeyemo; and other health industry executives.

Recall that CEOAFRICA reported that the healthwalk is part of the ongoing WASPEN conference holding from June 3-7, 2024, at LUTH under the theme “Advancing Clinical Nutrition Care: Regional Guidelines and Standards for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition”.

In an exclusive interview with CEOAFRICA, WASPEN founder Dr. Teresa Pounds said that one in three patients admitted for hospital care suffer malnutrition during their hospital stay. She stated that this incidence inadvertently prolongs hospitalization, raises hospital bills, and impacts on patient wellness.

The WASPEN conference will feature the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate, as the chairman; Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State as the chief host; and Prof. Wasiu Adeyemo of LUTH as host of the event.

The keynote speaker is the Special Adviser to Governor Sanwo-Olu on Health, Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi. Special guests at the programme are Prof. Cyril Usifoh, President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN); and Prof. Olivia Afam-Anene, President of the Dietitians Association of Nigeria.
