Kylian Mbappe sustained a broken nose during France’s 1-0 victory against Austria on Monday.

The injury occurred during the Group D match at Düsseldorf Arena when Mbappé collided with Austria’s Kevin Danso.

Following the collision, the World Cup-winning striker was visibly in pain and had to be substituted.

France coach Didier Deschamps expressed uncertainty about Mbappé’s availability for the remainder of the tournament immediately after the match.

Mbappe was promptly taken to a hospital in Düsseldorf, where the extent of his injury was confirmed by the French Football Federation.

In a statement, the federation said, “He will undergo treatment in the coming days, without undergoing surgery immediately. A mask will be made to allow the number 10 of the French team to consider resuming competition after a period devoted to treatment.”

The injury happened during an aerial duel when Mbappé’s face struck Danso’s shoulder, leaving his nose bloodied and swollen.

Austria goalkeeper Patrick Pentz quickly called for medical assistance upon seeing Mbappé’s condition.

Despite the setback, Mbappe remained optimistic and addressed the incident on social media, posting, “Any ideas for masks?” on X (formerly Twitter).

France confirmed that Mbappe had returned to the team’s training camp with the rest of the squad, indicating his potential return to play with a protective mask in the near future.
