The Nigerian senate has urged the federal government to intensify efforts in rescuing more than 200 school girls abducted by Boko Haram more than nine months ago.

This was stated by the Senate President, David Mark, while reading his welcome address at the plenary meeting on Tuesday.

Mr. Mark urged Nigerian citizens to get involved in ending the spate of violence and insecurity irrespective of political affiliation. He said the insecurity issues must be put to a stop as soon as possible.

“The tendency is to blame government for this present state of affairs,” Mr. Mark said.

“Every Nigerian, irrespective of partisanship, must demonstrate patriotism to our country. We must support our armed forces and other security operatives to stop this evil. Insecurity plagues all of us and must be tackled holistically. The armed forces and government must intensify efforts to rescue our young innocent Chibok girls”​he said.​

Ayogu Eze, representing Enugu North senatorial, said the senate had been on harping on the issue of the Boko Haram insurgency even before the state of emergency in the North East.

He also made reference to the recent developments in Baga, Borno State where an attack on the town by Boko Haram led to the loss of hundreds of lives.

Mr.​ Eze said Nigerians must unite and work together to fight against the current insurgency situation.

“If all of us rise as one people, we will defeat them” he said.

It has been nine months since over 200 girls were abducted from their hostels at Government day Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State by Boko Haram insurgents. A few of the students have since escaped but a majority remain in captivity.
