Activist lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), yesterday challenged the police to produce evidence of the trial of over 500 criminal suspects paraded by police last year, maintaining that he exercised fear that majority of them may have been extra judicially murdered.

At a press conference addressed at his Ikeja, Lagos office, Falana said from investigations conducted by him, it was evident that most of the victims of high profile cases across the country are nowhere to be found.

He said specifically that “what is appalling is that after the police may have paraded them before the press, and sentenced them to media trial, you will hear nothing about it. Some of them may have been extra judicially killed.”

Falana claimed that no fewer than 527 suspects were arrested and paraded by the police across the country in 2014 alone.

He challenged the police to declare the courts where the suspects are being tried and the stages of their cases in court.

Arguing he is not out to justify act of armed robbery, kidnapping and other forms of criminality by criminals, Falana called on the police in line with best practice by taking the suspects to court and not parade and eventually do away with them illegally.

Apart from this, Falana took the police to task on parading of suspects before the press before they are arraigned in court and final disposition of their cases.

He pointed out that illegal parade and extra-judicial killing of criminal suspects by law enforcement officials and incessant killing of innocent people through “accidental discharge” of firearms had encouraged and continue to encourage members of the public to resort to self help and brutal killing of criminal suspects through jungle justice.
