Over 500 students have been killed in the last three years of increasing insurgency attacks perpetrated by the extremist Boko Haram sect, the Northern Nigeria Students Association has said.

Speaking while honouring a former Military Administrator of Akwa Ibom State, Yakubu Bako, with the award of, ‘Grand Commander of Northern Nigeria Students’ on Wednesday, the students said they are disturbed about the welfare of their members.

The students’ association said hundreds of students remained critically injured and are currently at various hospitals receiving treatments. The association said it had become imperative for them to initiate moves that will help them to overcome the traumatic situations they face.

The leader of the Northern Students Association, Musa Terrang, said his group was able to compile the number of students killed through their committees attached to NEMA and Red Crescent.

He said some of the injured students are now orphans, causing the association to create an endowment fund to cater for them.

Meanwhile, the students said they decided to honour Mr. Bako for his contributions to society.

Responding, Mr. Bako assured the students of his readiness to help them achieve their goals especially because he also had no one to take of him while growing up.
