Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has disclosed that he considered retiring from international football after the 2026 FIFA World Cup but ultimately decided to continue representing his country.

The 41-year-old Al Nassr forward said discussions with Portugal’s president and head coach, Jorge Jesus, influenced his decision to remain available for the national team.

“I thought about retiring from international football after the World Cup,” Ronaldo said.

“But I spoke to the president and coach, and I am still here. I am an asset; I can help.”

Ronaldo is set to feature for Portugal in the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures as he continues his international career.

The veteran forward also stressed his desire to remain an inspiration to younger generations, saying his influence on young players is more important to him than his achievements on the pitch.

“The young kids love me because they saw me as an example, and that for me is the most important thing,” he said.

Ronaldo added that he plans to continue inspiring young people even after eventually ending his playing career.

“I will continue to do that even when I retire,” he added.
