The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kano has denied reports that its members are not identifying with President Goodluck Jonathan and are not displaying his posters in the city for fear of being attacked.

The party said it is more concerned about conducting issue-based campaigns than displaying the president’s posters. A faction of the party has accused the Kano PDP hierarchy of not doing enough to showcase Mr. Jonathan ahead of election in February in a state controlled by the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC).

But the PDP chairman in the state, Rabiu Dansharu and his secretary, Auwalu Danzabuwa, dismissed the allegations as “baseless and unfounded”.

At a media briefing Monday, Mr. Dansharu said the party’s campaigns are not based on posters and bill-board, but sending out the desired messages of true happenings in the party which the president represents.

Mr. Danzabuwa told the party’s supporters to wait after the president visits Kano on Wednesday for campaigns, before complaining about posters and bill boards. He said the party will commence massive display of the president’s posters after the visit.

He said the handlers of the president are men of tremendous integrity and true knowledge about democratic principles not just “street political vendors who hawks for what to eat in the name of democracy”.

“That is why we are doing what we are doing carefully with a lot of caution and peace,” he said.

“On Wednesday, Kano will see us the PDP, because historically Kano is the hot bed of our party and we are aware of the continuing love and understanding we receive from the people of the State as being shown during our governorship flagging up campaign, and they would not regret it,” he assured.
