Security agents attached to President Goodluck Jonathan had a frantic time dispersing a surging crowd of political thugs attempting to attack President Goodluck Jonathan’s convoy on Tuesday in Katsina.

The broom-wielding thugs pelted Mr. Jonathan’s convoy with stones and chanted ‘Sai Buhari’ as they struggled to get within touching distance of the vehicles.

The President, who was in the state for his presidential campaign, was visiting Hajiya Dada, the mother of late President Umar Musa Yar’adua when the incident happened.

Katsina is the home state of Muhammadu Buhari, the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate.

The youth, who were repelled as they tried to attack the president’s convoy driving into the Yar’Adua quarters in Katsina, waited patiently outside the former president’s home.

When it was time for Mr. Jonathan to depart from his visit to the Yar’Aduas’, the youth struck again, blocking off the president’s exit route and it took the firing of tear gas canisters to disperse them.

Earlier, Mr. Jonathan had paid a courtesy visit to Abdulmumuni Usman, the Emir of Katsina, where he spoke about how his political journey began as the vice president to Mr. Yar’Adua.

The President also addressed a rally at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp in the state where he promised to make life better for the people of the state.

He listed the establishment of Almajiri schools and a federal university as some of his achievements in Katsina State.

“It was your son that brought me as his deputy. Anything that you want from me, we will do it without you asking for it,” Mr. Jonathan said.

The President said that his administration is working hard to combat the nation’s security challenges, adding that a vote from the people would enable him continue his progress.

“We have challenges like many other countries in the world but we are still managing because of our focus,” said Mr. Jonathan.

“We will get through our challenges because we are working hard and you know it.”
