Empowering the Future: OWSD Celebrates International Day for Girls in ICT 2025

The Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD), Ibadan Branch, hosted an inspiring event in celebration of the International Day for Girls in ICT on Thursday, April 24, 2025. Under the theme “Girls in ICT: Bridging all Divides for an Inclusive Digital Transformation,” the occasion drew attendees from diverse backgrounds, including students, educators, and tech leaders, at the KAAF Auditorium, Department of Human Nutrition and Dietetics, University of Ibadan.

Among those present were Professor K.O. Adebowale, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, represented by Prof. Peter Olapegba, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration); Dr. Mercy Iroaganachi, University Librarian; Dr. Omowunmi Femi Akinlosotu, President of the Medical Women Association of Oyo State, representing the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences; Prof. Clementina Adenipekun, representing the Dean of Science; Dr. Oluwakemi Apata, representing the Dean of Renewable Natural Resources; Keynote Speaker Professor (Mrs.) Adenike Oyinlola Osofisan, the First Female Professor of Computer Science in sub-Saharan Africa; Plenary Speakers- Ms. Eniola Ebun, Co-founder of Awarri, Lagos, and Ms. Cecilia Adenusi, Co-founder of HSProjects, Ibadan; Prof. Aina Adeogun, Coordinator of OWSD Ibadan Branch; and various stakeholders.

The event showcased several engaging activities, including a TechDivas session focused on unleashing the potential of girls in ICT, an oratory contest debating the topic “The future of tech is female: Can girls in ICT be a game changer?” and an interactive session titled “The ABCs of Coding.”

In his remarks, Prof. Peter Olapegba emphasized the significance of information technology in today’s world, stating, "Every woman was once a girl, and every girl is a potential woman. I.T. is the present and the future because there is virtually nothing we do now that isn't driven by I.T. It offers opportunities for exposure to ICT, essentially investing in your future. Whatever course you want to study, I.T. is key."

The keynote speaker, Professor (Mrs.) Adenike Osofisan, underscored the importance of initiatives aimed at empowering girls in technology. In her address, she encouraged attendees to acquire coding skills, saying, "Tech Divas are initiatives and organizations that aim to empower and encourage all women and girls to pursue careers in technology. The richest people in the world today are programmers. If you know how to code, you will not be poor. All you need is a skill and to understand a programming language."

Prof. Osofisan further discussed the need for digital transformation, stating, “The real divide we have is access, usage, and quality of use. As a student with access to a mobile phone, you can begin to make money from how you use it. We need to create a supportive environment for our girls, provide access to technology and education, promote positive role models, and address barriers. It's essential to incorporate STEM into our curriculum from kindergarten.”

She urged educators to support students, saying, “It is important to foster critical thinking. Teachers, please do not put any stopping block on students who want to change their course of study. If they possess the skill and ability, let them pursue it. That's how we can unlock their potential. Mentoring is vital; we need people to guide us along our paths.”

Following the keynote address, Ms. Cecilia Adenusi led an engaging lecture on “The ABCs of Coding.” She explained, “Coding is an instruction you put into a computer to solve a specific problem. There are two major types of coding: Block coding and text-based coding. Block coding is visual and allows users to create programs using graphical blocks, while text-based coding involves typing instructions in a programming language.” Participants enjoyed a hands-on session where they learned to create a mobile app using MIT App Inventor.

Another plenary speaker, Ms. Eniola Ebun, addressed the importance of developing critical communication and leadership skills for young girls. She stated, "Communication is a two-way street. It is crucial to effectively communicate your ideas to get people to believe in your vision. Embrace a growth mindset, ask questions, and learn the technical aspects of our world. To be a leader in tech, you must be resilient, share your ideas, and be audacious in your passion. Every young girl in the tech world should have a mentor and never give up on your dreams."

Following these enlightening talks, students participated in a spirited debate competition on the topic, “The future of tech is female: Can girls in ICT be a game changer?” Schools showcased their talents and insights, with cash prizes awarded for outstanding performances. The competition not only provided participants with a platform to express their views but also fostered camaraderie and collaboration among students.

The event was made possible through generous sponsorship from notable organizations, including Nigerian Breweries Plc, FanMilk, and IDEA KONSULT LTD, all of whom share a commitment to empowering the next generation of female leaders in technology.

As the event wrapped up, attendees left feeling motivated and inspired to explore opportunities in the ICT field. Many secondary school students shared their thoughts afterward. One participant remarked, "Today has opened my eyes to the endless possibilities in tech. I want to learn more about coding and how I can contribute to the tech community."

The OWSD Ibadan Branch hopes that events like this will continue to inspire young women and girls to pursue their dreams in ICT, bridging the divides that have historically limited their access to technology and innovation.

In a world increasingly defined by digital transformation, initiatives such as the International Day for Girls in ICT serve as critical steps toward not only empowering women but also creating a more inclusive and equitable future in technology.
