Today, African nations unite to honor the 62nd anniversary of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), now known as the African Union (AU), a transformative entity that has been pivotal in steering the continent toward self-determination and collective progress.

Founded on May 25, 1963, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, by 32 African states with the main aim of bringing the African nations together and resolve the issues within the continent. The OAU emerged as a response to colonialism and the shared aspiration for political and economic independence across Africa. Its legacy paved the way for the AU, which embodies a renewed commitment to unity, democracy, and sustainable development in an evolving global landscape.

As we commemorate this significant milestone, leaders and citizens alike reflect on the journey that has brought Africa together. This year’s celebration resonates deeply with the theme of justice and reparations for Africans and people of African descent. The message is clear: acknowledging the past is essential in shaping a future that honors identity and heritage.

“Africa Day reminds us of our roots,” said AU Chairperson, João Lourenço. “We must celebrate our achievements and address the challenges that lie ahead as we continue to build a united and prosperous continent.”

Despite hurdles posed by economic disparities and geopolitical tensions, the AU has taken significant steps towards integration and collaboration. Initiatives promoting free trade, conflict resolution, and shared prosperity are pivotal in fostering a cohesive Africa that stands ready to compete on the global stage.

As we embark on this new chapter, dialogues on justice and reparations underline the urgent need for reconciliation and empowerment. Activists and leaders call for systemic changes that honor Africa’s diverse narratives and histories, advocating for policies that recognize the injustices faced by many.

Today serves not only as a historical reminder but as a call to action. The vision for a united Africa, where each nation thrives and every citizen finds their place, is more important than ever. As celebrations ensue across the continent, the journey continues—rooted in the identity of Africa, driven by unity, and fueled by the promise of a brighter future for all.

Join the movement this Africa Day, as we reaffirm our commitment to justice, reparations, and the unyielding spirit of African unity. Together, let’s boldly shape the future we envision.
