Following a successful public lecture themed "Mental Health: A Basic Human Right Crucial to Personal, Community, and Socio-Economic Development," the Board of Fellows of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (BOF-PSN) hosted a welcoming cocktail on the evening of July 2, 2025. The event took place after the main lecture and served as an opportunity for stakeholders in the pharmaceutical industry to unwind, network, and discuss business in a relaxed atmosphere. Attendees enjoyed a delightful spread of food and drinks, with lively music and dancing that fostered camaraderie among participants.

The following day, July 3, 2025, marked the commencement of the Annual General Meeting (AGM), where representatives from each state gathered to provide updates on their activities and achievements over the previous year. Although some states were unable to send representatives, reports were read on their behalf, highlighting key accomplishments and outlining objectives for the current year. In a notable moment, 145 pharmacists were also officially inducted as new fellows into the society, further strengthening BOF-PSN’s commitment to advancing pharmaceutical practice in Nigeria.

Later that evening, the agenda included a media briefing and dinner/award night, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and advocacy within the pharmaceutical community. National Chairman, Pharm. Uchenna Uzoma Apakama, announced an extensive nationwide campaign to raise awareness about drug and substance misuse starting from the grassroots level. “The campaign will be taken to the nooks and crannies of Nigeria to sensitize citizens,” he stated, emphasizing the collaborative effort required for success.

“Together, we are here to rekindle our interest to ensure that we safeguard humanity from the scourges of drugs and substance abuse. This project will be successful with the collective commitment of everyone here today,” Apakama urged. He also reflected on Brig. General MB Marwa’s (Rtd) request for collaboration, reiterating the need for unified action in the vital areas of drug demand reduction and education.

The gathering also included recognition of outstanding individuals within the industry. Various awards were presented for excellence and distinguished contributions to pharmacy practice, celebrating the remarkable efforts and achievements of professionals who have made significant impacts in their fields.

Among the dignitaries present were Pharm. Ayuba Tanko Ibrahim, President of the PSN; Pharm. (Sir) Ikechukwu Onyechi, MD of Alpha Pharmacy & Stores Ltd; Pharm. (Mazi) Sam Ohuabunwa, Past President of PSN; Pharm. Ahmed Yakassai, Past President of PSN; Pharm. Azubuike Okwor, Past President of PSN; Pharm. Olumide Akintayo, Past President of PSN; Pharm. Bankole Ezebuilo, National Chairman of NAIP; Pharm. (Prof.) Lere Baale, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, NAIP; and Dr. Varkey Verghese, MD/CEO of Jawa International Ltd.

The events of these two days underscored the importance of advocacy, collaboration, and commitment to mental health and substance abuse awareness in Nigeria, reiterating the need for a united front among health professionals to drive positive change. The BOF-PSN continues to emphasize its mission of fostering a healthier society through education and awareness, rallying support from all corners of the nation to combat the pressing issues facing the pharmaceutical industry.

As the BOF-PSN embarks on its new campaign, the commitment expressed by attendees at the cocktail and AGM reflects a shared vision of improving public health and reinforcing the fundamental human right to mental health care in Nigeria.
