
Dr. Monica Hemben Eimunjeze, a pharmacist, regulatory expert, and healthcare consultant, shared her thoughts on self-care where she emphasized that self-care and health should not be the exclusive preserve of healthcare professionals.
She delivered this compelling message during the second edition of the D'Bio Wellness & Selfcare Summit at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce & Industry (LCCI) Conference & Exhibition Centre, Alausa, Ikeja on September 24, 2025. Her address prioritized the crucial need to empower individuals with the knowledge and tools necessary for proactive health management.
In her remarks, Dr. Eimunjeze who is also the host and convener of the summit asserted that, "For me, this event is something that is very key; whichever sector or area you are in, self-care and health isn’t the exclusive preserve for those of us who are trained in the healthcare space." She underscored the importance of individual involvement in health decisions, noting that “there are so many things that you can do that could impact your health.”
Dr. Eimunjeze's vision for the summit extends beyond traditional healthcare frameworks. She pointed out the vital role of various sectors, including entertainment, in shaping health narratives among the youth. "We try to drive the youth into what we are doing around healthcare because for some of us, by the time you start making health a priority, it’s a bit late," she cautioned, emphasizing the urgency of early engagement in health awareness efforts.
Central to Dr. Eimunjeze's address was the framework established by the International Selfcare Foundation (ISF), which outlines seven critical pillars of self-care: knowledge and health literacy, nutrition, physical exercise, rational use of products, and mental health, among others. She articulated, “These are some of the things that play into advancing wellness and self-care,” positioning these pillars as foundational elements for improving health outcomes in Nigeria and beyond.
Her call for collective action resonated throughout the audience, as she expressed hope that attendees would leave the event with reinforced strategies for personal health management.
"We appreciate you all for coming to join us, and we hope that this will be a session that will drive and enforce the impact of self-care," she declared. Dr. Eimunjeze encouraged greater participation in health initiatives, inviting everyone to "come on the train and ride along with us" in the pursuit of a healthier future.
