Troops of the Nigerian Army under Operation HADIN KAI have arrested a man suspected of having links to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) during a security operation in Munguno Local Government Area of Borno State.

According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication covering the Lake Chad region, the suspect was apprehended at about 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday along the Maiduguri–Monguno highway during routine surveillance and vehicle checks by soldiers.

The report stated that troops of the 212 Battalion, deployed at Delta One, intercepted the suspect after observing what they considered suspicious behaviour.

A search of his belongings reportedly led to the recovery of a Starlink satellite internet terminal, a Wi-Fi router equipped with six access points, a mobile phone, and ₦1,000 in cash.

During preliminary questioning, the suspect allegedly claimed he operates an internet service business in his community and said the equipment was intended for commercial use.

However, military sources said the circumstances surrounding his movement and the communication devices found in his possession raised security concerns, prompting his arrest for further investigation.

The suspect and the recovered equipment have since been handed over to the Military Intelligence Brigade (7 MIB), where investigators are expected to conduct detailed profiling and intelligence analysis to determine whether he has any links to ISWAP or Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad (JAS).

Security officials said the investigation will focus on establishing the intended use of the Starlink terminal, whether it had already been deployed, identifying any possible associates, and determining if the equipment was acquired to support terrorist communications or logistical operations.

Authorities have yet to announce any formal charges, and the investigation remains ongoing.
